Artist: Neil Young
Genre: Singer / Songwriter
Label: Reprise

Recorded 43 years ago almost to the day, this latest repackaging of Young's extensive archives is a fascinating document, albeit one that will appeal most to anoraks. Washington DC's The Cellar Door was the setting for this solo outing just two months after the release of Young's seminal After the Goldrush. Though only 25, Young was already a veteran, confident in his skin and able to explore his inner self, a theme very much of the time. Most of the 13 tracks are delivered without commentary, though he breaks into a dope-flavoured rap before the closing Flying on the Ground Is Wrong. That song is one of the rarities; more attention might focus on Tell Me Why, After the Goldrush and Old Man, all delivered here without great fanfare. These were still new songs, yet to assume the weight of generational statements. neilyoung.com
