This is an impressive and mature album from a young Cork singer-songwriter. Nicole Maguire is very determined. Going on the biography on her website, she sought advice from Paul Brady and Damian Dempsey before asking the renowned Mitchell Froom to produce this debut. Froom in turn lined up some hard-hitters, including Elvis Costello drummer Pete Thomas, stellar bassist Bob Glaub, and classy guitarist Val McCallum. The result is a slow-burning collection that in time glows ever brighter. Maguire's voice is pure and intense, entirely at ease in these mostly intimate folk-rock songs. The settings are understated, giving all the songs a natural warmth. Inevitably, some are better realised than others.
Hard Love
(co-written with Jennifer Clarke) and the self-penned title track are highlights, but all lend weight to the belief that Maguire could prove to be the real deal. nicolemaguire.ie
