Dublin record store Road Records has announced that it will be closing its doors for good on July 24th.
Road is the latest in a long line of Irish indie stores to go out of business in the past few years, due largely to changes in music consumption patterns as music fans switch to digital downloads or shop online for CDs and vinyl.
This is the second time in 18 months that the Fade Street shop has decided to call it a day.
Back in January 2009, the shop’s owners, Dave Kennedy and Julie Collins, announced their intention to close, as turnover had slumped due to the economic downturn.
However, a campaign by the local music community, including the setting-up of an investment club, led to the shop continuing in business.
However, the shop’s survival has been short-lived. This week, Kennedy announced the bad news in a message on their website.
While acknowledging that they received “amazing support from people”, Kennedy admitted that it was just not possible to keep the shop open as a viable concern.
“I think the days of the small indie store are numbered,” he said. “We can’t blame digital sales, illegal downloading etc. The world is a changing place, and I can’t see any room in it for kooky little indie stores like ourselves.”
