These days bluegrass and old time music struggles to gain any attention from anyone other than hardcore devotees. There are exceptions, such as the genre- busting Punch Brothers. But after surfing on a wave of popularity (prompted by the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou?), bluegrass has slipped back into its customary role as junior to big brother country. Old Crow Medicine Show have had their ups and downs, but now they've reformed and are settling well, to judge by this energetic if somewhat predictable set. The Crows take a Pogueish slant on tradition, without having a songwriter of Shane McGowan's calibre. There's no doubting their musical chops, nor their willingness to give their all. But zippy prison japes such as Brushy Mountain Conjugal Trailer or the sensitive Dearly Departed Friend do have a certain sameness about them. ecrowmedicine.com Download: Doc's Day, Dearly Departed Friend
