Here’s another European techno producer frequenting ever bigger stages and venues. Bayern Munich fan and star of the film Berlin Calling, Paul Kalkbrenner has enjoyed a massive growth in popularity right around the world. It’s not just the movie, mind: albums such as last year’s Icke Wieder, tracks such as Sky and Sand and word-of-mouth about his live shows have also helped the producer’s cause.

Kalkbrenner’s career as a producer began on Ellen Allien’s Bpitch back in 1999. But his appearance in Hannes Stohr’s Berlin Calling (2008), playing a DJ called Ickarus, put him on a different level and prepared him for those bigger rooms. All the same, you know what you’re going to get with Kalkbrenner, and Icke Wieder sees him keeping faith with the melodic minimal techno style that served him well over the past decade.
