A band named after acclaimed 1970s German producer Conny Plank release a second album with two distinct halves . . . based on the life cycle of a butterfly. Could this Manchester instrumental trio be any more prog? The success of Hivemind lies not only in Plank's stylistically flawless nod to luminaries Yes, Pink Floyd and Camel, but by adding elements of Mogwai, Can and even Boards of Canada. The first half dabbles in post-rock and disco (Aphidelity features some serious Giorgio Moroder-esque synth noodling) without losing sight of its prog-rock roots. The clean, cinematic strings of Metamorphosis (naturally) signal the start of the album's flip side, a stronger, increasingly cohesive set of lighter, absorbing tracks. Like its subject matter, Hivemind crawls before finding its wings and, on Khepri, flies towards a dramatic, uplifting conclusion. facebook.com/plankuk
