Pop Corner: Julia Michaels throws it back to the 1990s on Uh Huh

Elsewhere, Christine and the Queens wants to make the charts multilingual

Julia Michaels: it’s the little details

TRACK OF THE WEEK
Julia Michaels - Uh Huh

Julia Michaels may write huge bangers for megastars (Selena's Hands to Myself and Bieber's Sorry) but when it comes to her solo stuff, she throws it back to 1990s indie divas. Listen to Uh Huh in companion with Liz Phair's Why Can't I and tell us we're wrong. Comparisons aside, it's the little details that make this track addictive – the way her voice catches on the chorus' 'uh huh' and the sexy slide of the electric guitar hint at untold possibilities.

Hero of the week is Christine and the Queens, who told the BBC that she wanted to make the charts multilingual. "I hope Justin Bieber is going to do a French song, so we can have a 100 per cent French single in the UK. Let's go crazy." She went on, "I've been fiddling about with Italian and Spanish a bit myself. I'm just mastering two languages for now. But I'd love to use more. With every language comes a music, a way to sing, a way to describe the world. An English man thinks slightly differently than a French man."

Meanwhile, Will Young told Bryony Gordon's telegraph podcast the background to his Strictly departure. "I was really ill. I was dragging myself to rehearsals. I just couldn't do it any more. It was so bad I thought – I'm not joking – I thought about breaking my leg". He explained that his PTSD had stopped him from competing. "I decided to take on Strictly because I bloody love dancing. And I bloody hated it, because I was so ill."

Zero of the week is the lack of hip hop on The X Factor, Snoop Dogg told the Metro. "Simon knows I want to find him a hip-hop star on The X Factor. There is so much hip-hop talent on the streets of the UK – but they ain't got nobody to develop it. I told him I would clear my schedule to come and help out at the audition stages and find him a global hip-hop star and he seems interested – he knows the value of finding one. The X Factor has done great at finding pop stars, but it still hasn't found a hip-hop star".
