Pop Corner: Selena is not farting carrots and Ariana is a blast

The latest pop news, including a new Chvrches track and some wisdom from 5SOS

Selena Gomez: a good sport about a tiny misinterpretation

Track of the week: Never Ending Circles by Chvrches

Our fave Scottish electropoppers are back, with a spiky breakup song. Over a background of cascading synths, Lauren Chrvches marches up to a rubbish ex and delivers all the lines you wish you could have thought of at the time (“Throw me no bones and I’ll tell you no lies”). Perfection.

Hero of the week is Selena Gomez . Apparently some listeners had misinterpreted the opening line in her slinky new song Good For You. What Selena sings: "I'm 14 carats." What they heard: "I'm farting carrots." Oh dear. Selena told BBC Radio 1 "Wouldn't that just start the tone really sexy and that's what you wanna hear a girl say. It's also because you guys have the accent so it does kind of sound like that, for sure. You know what, it could be something we also make viral. Things happen!" What a good sport.

Wondering what Ariana Grande is like to work with? Her Scream Queens co-star Skyler Samuels has the lowdown. She told Access Hollywood: "I didn't even know that she was a horror fan or anything like that – apparently she's a cult horror fan. She was a blast to have on set – she's not only one of the nicest people I've ever met, but she's hysterical. Watching what happens to her character in the first two episodes? Oh boy. That girl is hilarious and all over the place."

Zero of the week is rushing things, according to 5 Seconds of Summer. Ashton 5SOS told Rolling Stone: "The first thing we realised as a band when we started writing songs at 15, 16, is that you can write a song, but to write a real song that's from your heart and that really connects with you emotionally and spiritually, that takes time."

Michael 5SOS went on, reminiscing about his earlier work: “It had, like, three chords, and it was about the moon. Something about the moon and a girl. She was a nonexistent girl because I was 12. I wanted to write a song about a girl so that people would be like, ‘Wow! Girls like you?’ And I’d be like ‘Yeah, totally,’ when in reality that’s just not true.”
