For his somewhat tardy follow-up to his promising alt.country 2012 debut, Feathers & Fishhooks, Nashville music child Rayland Baxter (his father Bucky's steel guitar was a feature on Dylan's "Never-Ending Tour" in the 1990s) goes walkabout, albeit with a degree of purpose.

"To me, Imaginary Man is an audible record of my journey down the bright blue river of imagination."

It is also an attempt to bridge country to a more contemporary aesthetic without losing its heart.

But the music drifts and the melodies don't quite hit the mark, though Yellow Eyes, Oh My Captain, All In My Head and Memories of Old Hickory all provide moments of sweet melancholy, enhanced by his vulnerable vocals.

His celebration of his Israeli experience, Your Love, also seems bizarrely one-eyed considering recent events.
