Funeral Party: intoxicating and intoxicated

This is how you kick out the jams, dude

This is how you kick out the jams, dude. East LA’s Funeral Party are five trash-talking brats living high on the hog and producing copious amounts of slamming post-punk indie-dance rock. They sound both intoxicating and intoxicated, making them the best kind of trouble to come out of LA in yonks. Or, at least, the best kind of trouble you can get from a band who take their name from a Cure tune.

Begin your investigation into the band by checking out the three snotty anthems on their ³Bootleg EP². ³Chalice² and ³Carwars² roar out of the traps, build up a magnificent head of steam (thanks to Chad Elliott’s raspy vocal growl) and then ignite with fantastic fury. Meanwhile, ³NYC Moves to the Sound of LA² carries on that fine tradition of bands from one side of America dissing their peers on the other side of the country.

The band made their bones playing all-age backyard parties around LA where everyone was happy if the cops didn’t turn up. When the cops did show up, they were sometimes greeted with a hail of bottles. Now that the band have moved on to more conventional venues by all accounts, they blew Trail of Dead offstage on a recent US tour everyone else can (g)rave along too.
