Yes, we know the first time you went to see Leonard Cohen on his “comeback” tour several years ago that there was, in the deep, dark corner of your mind, a thought that this might well be the last chance. Well, clearly he isn’t going to shuffle off without a fair fight, and so it comes to pass that Cohen is once again returning to Ireland for a sequence of shows. The difference here is that he will be performing, for the first time for Irish audiences, material from his new album, Old Ideas.
Your humble (and, indeed, privileged) correspondent had the good fortune to catch Cohen’s show in Ghent a few weeks ago. While it might not have the excitability and zest of, say, Azealia Banks, it most certainly has Zen-like reflectiveness and assured musicianship. And most of the songs (especially the new ones) are just plain lovely.
It is what it is, then: slow moving, but moving nonetheless.
