This is a date for those who still keep the faith with house music. As Moodymann, Kenny Dixon Jr (below) has spent his career crafting beautifully emotional and enigmatic soulful tracks that cross all manner of black music divides to join the dots between Marvin Gaye and Carl Craig. Releases such as Forevernevermore and Mahogany Brown are bona- fide classics thanks to the symphonic depth and musical breadth of Dixon’s sound.
The Detroit native also has another agenda, and a string of complex, politically charged one-line riddles have seen him muse on the heart and soul of both his hometown (which has been particularly hit by bad times) and Black America. Best of all, Dixon is still producing the goods.
Another Black Sunday, his most recent album, is a deep, smoky excursion into far-out freestyle sounds. And there’s a new Moodymann release promised for the summer.
