It’s not so long ago that New Year’s Eve in clubland used to mean over-the-top events, astronomical fees for so-so superstar DJs and eye-watering prices at the door. Those days may be over but NYE is still a big night out.

Up north, you can go for the techno option with Dave Clarke and friends at Shine or enjoy a hard-house hootenanny with Alex Kidd and friends in Newcastle. In the Big Smoke, there’s a monster bill at the Twisted Pepper topped by Ewan Pearson (right), a Kountdown ball starring Kormac’s Big Band (below) and Japanese Popstars at Tripod, or a free romp at the Bernard Shaw with comedians, DJs, live acts and good vibes.

In Cork, Dubculture’s farewell to 2010 will be helmed by DJ Welfare, Toby Kaar, Psymonok, Coherx and guests, while Mr Whippy’s Sound System will roar into action once more in Galway.
