As always, it comes down to the tunes. Sure, Clane trio Planet Parade could have picked a better name to toil under, one which we don’t keep forgetting or mixing up with someone else’s moniker, but they’re stuck with it now. At least they didn’t take solace in a few profanities or misplaced punctuation marks.
But PP made no mistakes whatsoever with the tunes. Seen in action supporting Wild Beasts in Dublin the other week, PP’s set was wall to wall with quirky new-wave pop melodies and grooves.
Imagine The Police fronted by Paul Weller as he went from The Jam to the Style Council and you’re on the right track. PP’s biggest selling point at present is the number of shiny, bendy tunes in their live set and the muscular manner in which they despatch them.
As so often happens with new acts, it's their live show as much as their debut release (the promising Ghosts to PeopleEP) which will do the bulk of the heavy lifting for them for now. By the time they return to the studio, expect that live show confidence to produce one hell of a pay-off.
