There is little doubt that Stevie Wonder is one of popular music’s greats, as well as one of the most admired songwriters and musicians in contemporary music.
But this concert is bound to be a double-edged experience; on the one hand, we will quite likely be treated to Wonder's inestimable work on Tamla Motown from the 1960s and 1970s – those giddy pop/soul/funk songs tinged with polyrhythmic experimentation and a lyrical ear for radical racial, social and political concerns. On the other hand, we just might be treated to Wonder's less thrilling music from the 1980s and 1990s, which comprises cloying hit singles (1982's Ebony and Ivory) and mediocre albums (1995's Conversation Peace).
Whatever way it pans out, we can be certain that the gig will be never less than intriguing, if not just to witness one of the last remaining elder statesmen of black music strutting his stuff.
