The story behind the name begins in a pet shop in Broxbourne, a town outside London you’ve probably never heard of.
Every Sunday, Jade Williams would turn up for work, tending to the cats, dogs, rabbits and guinea pigs. Every week her co-workers would forget her name and call her “Sunday Girl” instead. When Williams moved from being a pet shop girl to would-be pop-star, the name stuck.
Her debut single, Four Floors, is a beaut. As is the norm, it comes with a plethora of remixes – Diplo's version is the one to search out – but the original shows Williams's true intent. Dramatic, emotional, melancholic and alluringly elegant, Four Floorsbodes well for Sunday Girl's career away from the shopfloor.
Staying with animals, Williams's musical ducks are now very much in a line. Signed to Geffen, her debut album, Say Hey, which was recorded with Ladyhawke producer Jim Elliot and that man Diplo, is due for release this summer. She's also overcome a chronic fear of singing in public with the help of a hypnotist, so live shows can be expected.
If Sunday Girl keeps making tunes as swooping and swooning as Four Floors, she'll be able to pay someone else to muck out those rabbit hutches.
