Danny George Wilson of Danny & the Champions of The World
What's on your rider?I go through different phases. Currently, I like cider.
What's your pre-gig ritual/ routine? It's all pretty relaxed – a couple of pints. No hugs, cuddles, inspirational speeches or high fives, I'm afraid.
How do you get to the gig – limo, taxi, walking?Walking is nice but it's a rarity. We're usually staying at a Travelodge in the middle of nowhere!
Who is the most famous person to have shown up at one of your gigs? There's been quite a lot of musicians but other than that, the odd actor, a few writers and a Swedish football international whose name I can't remember. I guess we're just not soundtracking the celebrity world right now! Maybe we should work on that.
Most embarrassing on-stage moment?I don't really get embarrassed. I forget words all the time, and I've accidentally head-butted the mic stand a few times, fallen over. You get used to it.
What's the most you've ever paid for a gig ticket?I've spent a lot for Brian Wilson shows, Jackson Browne, Neil Young. I can't afford those shows anymore, though.
Have you a special stage wardrobe? No jumpsuits here, I'm afraid.
Do you like to meet and greet fans after the gig?Best part of the night. I've made a lot of great friends at our shows over the years.
Any useful stage tips?Be natural and enjoy it.
What's the worst thing ever thrown at you?A monkey threw some poo at me once, but not at a gig, thankfully. They're not shy, monkeys.
If you could be in any other band, which one?Today I'd love to be in Richmond Fontaine. I love their music, they're great people, and Willy Vlautin's books are wonderful.
What's your best tour story? When a previous band of mine, Grand Drive, were in Nashville, our bus had to be checked out by the tourbus mechanic. Next to ours was a beautiful vintage chrome tour bus. One of the most beautiful vehicles I've ever seen. The number plate spelled ZUMA. Turns out it was Neil Young's personal bus. The driver let me on and showed me around. It was amazing.
