Eminem - Phenomenal
"I worked my butt off [to get here]," spits Em, on this single from the soundtrack to Jake Gyllenhaal's Southpaw movie. "Now it's a subject I don't know how to shut up about..." He isn't exaggerating. Screenwriter Kurt Sutter originally wrote the part of boxer Billy Hope for Eminem (who turned it down) and has said he regards the film as a "metaphorical sequel" to the rapper's 8 Mile biopic. This track also rakes over familiar ground, rehashing themes (self-empowerment, overcoming enormous odds) Eminem last explored on 2002's Lose Yourself, 2010's Not Afraid, 2014's Guts Over Fear et al. Time to change the record, perhaps...
A$AP Rocky ft. Rod Stewart, Miguel, Mark Ronson - Everyday
Celebrity DJ Mark Ronson has a self-confessed "nerdy, encyclopaedic knowledge of pop history". So presumably it was the producer of this, the second single from A$AP Rocky's At.Long.Last.A$AP album, who selected to sample Python Lee Jackson's 1968 recording of From a Broken Dream (featuring a young Rod Stewart on lead vocals). Otherwise, it is business as usual for A$AP Rocky, who claims to be so attractive lesbians want to make love to him. Naturally, the New York rapper doesn't word his boast quite that politely.
The Strypes - Get Into It
Two years after their debut album Snapshot turned heads on both sides of the Atlantic, The Stypes return with even more sharp suits and retro riffs. Get Into It is the first single from their Little Victories album, due next month. The Cavan lads tour forthcoming UK and Ireland tour starts at the Nerve Centre in Derry on September 29th.
Hot Chip - Dancing in the Dark (live)
Hot Chip closed their recent show at Boston's House of Blues with this brilliant (albeit slightly U2-esque) cover of the Bruce Springsteen classic. All that's missing from the original is an onstage cameo by Courteney Cox.
