There are few electronic producers whose songwriting matches up to their studio prowess – usually it's one or the other. But on this debut album SOHN proves to be a highly impressive exception. Toph Taylor was brought up in London and is now based in Vienna, and his sophisticated electro-pop and honeyed voice warrant favourable comparison with the likes of James Blake and Baths: artists who understand the seductive power of synthesisers and soul. But as deliciously inviting as Tremors sounds – and it is balm for the ears – the songs are not overwhelmed. The dark Paralysed explores the helpless fatalism of love, Veto swoons and sways with confidence and grandeur, and the gloriously direct Artifice is pure pop par excellence. And for those who like their beats to bang, Lights has all the urgency, tension and release of great dance music, distilled into a four-and-a-half-minute pop song. sohnmusic.com
