It's always fascinating when a producer shows off an entirely different sound to the gallery. Paul Woolford has a winning slew of house and techno tracks to his credit, but Special Request is a horse of a much different colour. This is the sound of '93, inspired by pirate radio stations blasting out jungle, hardcore and rave, and turning Woolford's youthful head in the process. Soul Music is a riot of renegade soundwaves, manic basslines and proper ragga mania. Every track seems designed to make extra-large bassbins wobble with ecstatic abandon, each one fired up for maximum hardcore, hedonistic wildness. Lockjaw, Cold Blooded and Soundboy Killer (complete with chatter from a miffed MC throwing people off the stage) have the demented energy to bring back the sweaty atmosphere of old. Hardcore, you know the score. soundcloud.com/paulwoolford
