This low-key gem clocks in at just over 25 minutes, and you will be hard-pressed to find a better 25 minutes this year, especially if you’ve a grá for immaculately crafted, country-flavoured, early rock’n’roll. Thompson has a serious pedigree.
The only son of luminaries Richard and Linda, he has carved almost a reluctant career combining the influence of both with an unerring feel for lovelorn quality pop. He has a weakness for country, as evidenced by 2007’s Upfront & Down Low.
He joined up with Kelly Jones after she suggested their voices would gel, and they wrote this album with writer/performer Bill DeMain. Songs such as Better At Lying, Don’t Remind Me and the gorgeous I Thought That We Said Goodbye certainly suggest that Jones was right. See them in Kilkenny this weekend.
