Elusive and mercurial, This Is How We Fly draw from a heady mix of Irish, American and Swedish folk and jazz influences. They boldly knit percussive dance into the fabric of who they are and let listeners make of it what they will. Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh's resonant Hardanger fiddle and Seán MacErlaine's clarinet and software mixes make the space in which American dancer Nic Gareiss traces light-soaked shapes, with Petter Berndalen's percussion propelling the trio into orbit. It's a bold and unfamiliar path, full of surprising diversions that reveal themselves surreptitiously. This is fresh-faced, unboxable music, though it struggles somewhat to capture the levitational delights of Gareiss' steps in the two dimensions of the recording studio. A short film by Donal Dineen and Myles O'Reilly on the band's website goes some way towards illustrating, if not capturing, the interplay between dance and music. thisishowwefly.net
