Tony Allen: Film Of Life

It's right and proper that one of the greatest drummers ever continues to get his props. In recent years the Afrobeat co-creator, Africa 70 bandleader and Fela Kuti's percussionist in chief has enjoyed a renaissance, thanks largely to an association with Damon Albarn on Gorillaz and other projects. Here, on his 10th solo album, Allen demonstrates he still has the muscle memory, rhythmic heft and dexterous flow to dazzle. Instead of solos and grandstanding, he creates elaborate, infectious grooves full of hypnotic power. He also contributes vocals and both Moving On and Boat Journey are neat, supple tunes. Elsewhere, Albarn turns up for Going Back and there are contributions from Nigerian singer Kuku and group Adunni. Throughout, though, the light shines on the drummer. tonyallenafrobeat.com
