What's On Your Rider?

What's on your rider?I usually forget to ask for one so I'm delighted to see sweeties, a basket of fruit, crisps, wine and water, which I've heard is good for you. I do make sure the band get the same plus lots of beer and wine to have a happy time on the road.

What would be on your fantasy rider?A high-octane one like J-Lo's: a Thai masseuse on call, champagne flowing from glasses in triangular display, walls painted white with white lilies.

What's your pre-gig ritual? Not sure if I'm superstitious but I always follow the same routine. No meals up to three hours before a gig, although bananas and a glass of red wine are allowed.

How do you get to the gig – limo, taxi, walking? When I gig in Dublin I try to cycle. When I'm abroad I usually position myself so I can walk.

What's the best gig you've been to, and why?I've been to several Nick Cave the Bad Seeds gigs, which are always great – they're either intimate or madly rocking out.

What are your favourite venues? It's shared between the Roundhouse, London, the Spiegeltent and the Olympia, Dublin.

Who is the most famous person to have shown up at one of your gigs?William Hurt, Tim Robbins, Russell Brand.

Most embarrassing on-stage moment?I have fallen over monitors, nearly chipped a tooth and was close to forgetting a band member's surname on introduction – the gap between remembering was awful.

What's your crowd-pleasing number? In These Shoesfor its joy and madness and excuse to wear sparkly Dorothy shoes, and the poignant Ship Song, singing as we leave though the audience.

Chatting between songs – good or bad, and why?I'm divided sometimes, as it's good to have fun connecting and at other times to have distance. It's a fine balance.

Do you like to meet and greet fans after the gig?I love it. I enjoy a chat after the show, and it's nice after an hour or two of them just hearing me that I have a chance to speak to them while unwinding. You can meet some lovely, interesting people and some nice but strange ones, too.
