Sven Nykvist, who died last week aged 83, was one of the greatest cinematographers in film history.

He was born in Sweden, where he first worked with Ingmar Bergman on Sawdust and Tinsel (1953). They collaborated on more than two dozen movies, from the striking black-and-white images of Persona and The Virgin Spring to his rich and subtle use of colour in Cries and Whispers and Fanny and Alexander, both of which earned Nykvist Oscars.

Nykvist worked extensively on US productions, notably Pretty Baby, Star 80, Crimes and Misdemeanors and What's Eating Gilbert Grape? He directed three feature films, most recently The Ox (1991), a compelling, brooding drama starring Bergman regulars Max von Sydow and Liv Ullmann.
