It was Chinoiseries that first drew people to Onra’s handiwork in 2007. That album saw Parisian producer and DJ Amaud Bertrand build and hone some brilliant oddball hip-hop instrumentals using vintage Vietnamese and Chinese pop tunes as his source material. A second volume of bespoke boom-bap adventures with Asian vinyl was released last year on the Dubin- based All City label.

Bertrand isn’t just a man for reconfiguring dusty grooves, however, and his back-pages also include the Dilla- and Madlib-styled 1.0.8, the collaborative Tribute and the excellent Long Distance, which saw him following the hip-hop boogie line with an album of shimmering neon- lit deep funk jams and electrosoul grooves.

Support for Onra comes from Cork DJ and producer Colm K, who has worked recently with the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and is prepping an album for later in the year.
