As its contribution to the 2006 Mozart celebrations, Harmonia Mundi has released 10 outstanding Mozart recordings (in elegant CD-book format with slipcase), including this irrepressible performance of Cosi fan tutte. From the whiplash opening chords of the overture, it is obvious that this is going to be a highly charged reading, emphasing the energy of the score. This, coupled with the conductor's scrupulous use of authentic instrumentation, makes for an exhilarating performance. As the two sisters at the centre of the sophisticated comedy, Veronique Gens and Bernarda Fink sing their solos with musical and dramatic insight, and their voices blend beautifully in the great duets.
