PUCCINI: LA BOHÈME
des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Symphonieorchester des
Bäyerischen Rundfunks; Conductor: Bertrand De Billy
La Bohème is probably Puccini's most perfect opera, if not his greatest, its fresh emotion reminding us of our own youth and bohemian gaiety. This recording brings together two of the most talented young opera singers in the main roles, with an adequate supporting cast. The star of the set is Villazon, whose singing of Rudolfo is both wonderful in tone and charismatic in its intensity. This recording has the frisson of live performance, with orchestra and conductor supporting the singers and allowing the music to breathe. A fine performance, even if it does not entirely erase memories of the great De Los Angeles/Björling set. www.deutschegrammophon.com COLMAN MORRISEY
