JENNIFER LARMORE (WITH MAJELLA CULLAGH AND BRUCE FORD) Bravura Diva Opera Rara ORR 231 ****
The title is Bravura Diva and that's exactly what it is. The recital, originally written for the legendary Maria Malibran in 1830, is sung with bravura by Jennifer Larmore. Though she may not have as beautiful a voice as some of her contemporaries, Larmore's elan in meeting the difficulties of these arias head on makes for an exciting and riveting recital, despite flaws. There is some rare music here, with the opening aria by Costa, based on the Abelard-Heloise letters, particularly evocative and arresting. There are also some lovely duets with Majella Cullagh, the voices blending beautifully. As ever with Opera Rara, the accompanying booklet and packaging are exemplary. All in all, a fine recital of rare bel canto repertoire. www.opera-rara.com
