Hugh Lane Gallery: Robert Plane (clarinet), Philip Dukes (viola) and Sophia Rahman (piano) have not wished to merge their individualities in the title of their Trio but they play together in happy agreement and have been doing so for 10 years. Their recital in the Hugh Lane Gallery on Sunday, after two pieces by Bruch as an introduction to the not-so-common combination of clarinet, viola and piano, centred round the brief Hommage à R. Schumann by Kurtag. This has six movements, lasting in all 10 minutes, so it puts on

Whether looking back at Schumann's Fairy Tales or further at Mozart's Kegelstatt Trio, Kurtag throws into high relief the expansiveness, the almost leisurely quality of the earlier works, but he does this without implying criticism.

The three players were equally at home in the different styles and periods, finding that they were basically expressions of one language, but in no way neglecting their individual characteristics - Mozart was very Mozartian even though viewed through the mists of three centuries.

Nos 3 and 7 from Eight pieces Op.
