Jade Jagger has many roles - fashion muse, jewellery designer, model, mother - but the one for fashion Monday most likely to stick is that of Mick Jagger's daughter from his marriage to Bianca.
Being the offspring of extremely famous parents is never easy and so it is no wonder Jade J has tried out so many other identities. Like another English woman of the same generation, Stella McCartney, any success she achieves will always be measured against that of her father and mother. Since separating from her husband Piers Jackson, Jade has evolved into one of London's unofficial style leaders thanks in part to her very specific approach to dressing. Last spring, she modelled for both Vivienne Westwood and her favourite designer Matthew Williamson, whose embroidered and beaded dresses in peacock colours she often wears. The Jagger take on fashion is Notting Hill bohemianism in which inexpensive, second-hand pieces bought on the Portobello Road are mixed with new clothes to create a distinctive look. Key elements here are lace slips and petticoats worn as dresses, soft-shouldered men's tweed jackets and loose, roomy knitwear.
On today's page, Jade shows this approach works just as well with clothes from Marks & Spencer. So if you don't fancy rummaging through second-hand stalls over several weekends to assemble the right items, then one-store shopping can provide an alternative solution. The secret lies in the mix, throwing together disparate elements such as velvet devore and rough wool, or mockcroc ankle boots with a tailored suit.
It takes a certain amount of chutzpah to carry off these combinations because they demand flair and confidence. Well-known parents, however, are not an essential requirement.
All clothing and accessories shown on this page are available from Marks & Spencer at selected outlets.
