Soccer fans should note that the Collingwood Cup will be hosted this year by the RCSI for the first time ever. The competition, which has been played annually since 1914 among Irish universities in both the Republic and Northern Ireland, will take place from February 19th to 23rd at the RCSI's sports grounds in Dardistown, Dublin.
The Collingwood Cup was originally donated by Dr Bertram James Collingwood, who served as a civil surgeon in the Royal Army Medical Corps in South Africa during the Boer War. This was a typical career outlet for many of the early graduates from the RCSI. In 1914 Dr Collingwood presented a trophy for football competition among Irish universities.
