THE INCREDIBLE STRING BAND
Tricks of the Senses
Hux Records***

Formed in the mid-1960s in Glasgow, the Incredible String Band were one of the originators of the folk/psychedelia genre – Afghan coats, patchouli, jazz Woodbines and an exotic/esoteric approach to mixing old blues with (then) contemporary flavours were the orders of the day. Prog rock (followed by glam and punk) undercut their worth, but as the years passed and everyone from Syd Barrett to Devendra Banhart borrowed from ISB's blueprint, their influence has slowly spread. This two-CD reissue features unreleased recordings from 1966 to 1972, a period considered to be the band's most productive and innovative. It's mostly very interesting material, albeit trapped in an often amusing time warp; that said, you can't deny the inherent quality of songs such as All Too Much For Me, The Headand Long Long Road.
