Romberg to Rodgers

NCH, Dublin

They don't write songs like these any more - but they will always be sung, here courtesy of the hallowed Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society. The title promises much, and the performance amply fulfils expectations.

The featured composers include Sigmund Romberg, Ivor Novello, Sandy Wilson, Noel Coward, Lerner and Lowe, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein and others.

The songs are taken from such memorabilia as The Student Prince, The Desert Song, The Dancing Years, The Boy Friend, Kismet, Guys and Dolls, South Pacific and My Fair Lady. They engage every mood, a compendium of words and music well on the way to immortality.

And they are treated here with a mixture of fun and respect, as apt to tug at the heartstrings as they are to tap on the funny bone. They are supported by a splendid orchestra, conducted by Gearóid Grant, which provides a cushion of wonderful sound for the singers and chorus, with director-choreographer Marina Kealy in full control of movement and set-pieces.

The lead singers are captivating. Highlights include Anne Maria Smith with Waltz of My Heart; Philip Byrne's If Ever I Would Leave You; Sarah Guilmartin with the sweetest version of A Stranger in Paradise; Sandra Kelly and the wistful Wouldn't It Be Loverly and Garry Mountaine's rousing finale, Get Me to the Church on Time. And the youthful John McCall impresses more than once as a talented singer-dancer.

All of which brings me to Paul Byrom, who already, at the tender age of 26, has all the

ingredients required to become a huge star of the international stage musical. He can act, looks great, sings like an angel, has a strong stage presence and the dramatic voice to interpret any song. Catch him while you still can.

Runs to Nov 27 (except Friday)
