FATBOY SLIM Late Night Tales Azuli ****
In the sleevenotes for this contribution to the Late Night Tales series, Norman Cook speaks fondly about the craft of making mix-tapes for friends and lovers.
A good tape, notes Cook, is a chance to impress and inspire and he has applied the same logic to this mix.
Full of hiss and crackle (rather than the super- smooth, bump-free ride beloved of so many mixes), the album takes classics like Jonathan Richman's Roadrunner and Mink Deville's Spanish Stroll, as well as such dusty vintage grooves as Paul Davidson's Midnight Rider and Sly Stone's My World.
Indeed, for every familiar sound (Kenny Rogers's Just Dropped In, The Velvet Undergound's Who Loves The Sun?), there is a corresponding rare cut from Ben Vereen or the soulful strut of Oscar Brown Jr.
There are also two exclusives worth pursuing: a Fatboy cover of Kraftwerk's Radioactivity and a Paul Heaton- written tune by Bootsy Collins. www.latenighttales.co.uk- JIM CARROLL

JONNY GREENWOOD There Will Be Blood Original Soundtrack Nonesuch ****
If you're wondering what Radiohead's floppy-fringed guitarist does when he's not changing the face of rock music, well, he spends quite a bit of his spare time as composer-in- residence with the BBC Concert Orchestra, writing dark, brooding pieces with an undercurrent of unease.
When composing the soundtrack to Paul Thomas Anderson's upcoming film There Will Be Blood, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Greenwood sat back and thought of the film's "fucked- up, oppressive religious mood" and the pervading presence of greed in this epic of the early days of the Texas oil industry.
The music is performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra, the Emperor Quartet, cellist Caroline Dale and pianist Michael Dussek, but Greenwood's signature style, all stops and starts, alternating moods and long, dreamlike movements, should sit nicely with the music he makes in his day job. www.nonesuch.com - KEVIN COURTNEY
