A HANDSOME canvas by Roderic O'Conor titled Girl With Red Waistcoat, and dating from about 1924, is one of 170 pictures included in the Irish art auction being held by de Vere's in the National Concert Hall on Tuesday, June 11th. A late work by O'Conor, the painting carries an estimate of £20,000-£30,000.
Given the recent world record prices set for the work of Jack B. Yeats, there is certain to be considerable interest in two oils by the artist. Both Secret Eyes and The Hard Sailor Man date from 1946 and were formerly owned by the late Mary Lavin; they carry the same estimate of £30,000-£35,000.
A Mainie Jellett canvas called Achill Horses, previously owned by AIB, is expected to make £6,000-£9,000 and a handsome James Le Jeune view of Dublin's College Green ought to sell for around the same price.
There are also two pictures by Patrick Tuohy, A Young Girl Seated In An Interior, from 1919, and the somewhat later portrait of Lady de Courcy Whealer. The former work is estimated at £4,000-£6,000 and the latter at £3,000-£5,000.
The wide ranging sale includes a French landscape by Nathaniel Hone (£6,000-£7,000); two Walter Osborne paintings, a street scene (£13,000-£16,000) and a landscape (£6,000-£9,000); and a winsome work by Lavery of a garlanded girl (£13,000-£16,000).
Auctioneer John de Vere White has added a selection of post 1960 Irish art "to create a serious forum for people to buy and sell modern Irish paintings.
In addition, there is a small group of literary works for sale, not least the typescript of a play by Frank O'Connor called The Lost Legion. Seemingly hitherto unknown to students of O'Connor's work, this script is expected to make £1,000-£1,300.
A first edition of James Joyce's Ulysses carries an estimate of £700-£800, and Sir William Orpen's Stories of Old Ireland and Myself with an ink and wash drawing by the artist as well as two letters should sell for £400-£600.
