BIG SANDY AND HIS FLY-RITE BOYS
Turntable Matinee Yep Roc ***
These guys are real enthusiasts for music - provided the style was popular between the twin pillars of the Korean and Vietnam wars. As such, these 14 tracks cover rockabilly, rock'n'roll, bobby-sox ballads, western swing and early soul. The opening track, Power of the 45, sets out their stall; in it they cite their heroes, everyone from the late Link Wray to the still duck-walking Chuck Berry and a host of other luminaries lost in the mists of time. As enthusiasts with a real love of their subject they are faithful to the styles of some 50 years ago, but enjoyable as it undoubtedly is, the music lacks a vital spark to take it to another level beyond imitation. That said, I'd say their live show must be a hoot. www.bigsandy.net Joe Breen
