ERIN McKEOWN
Sing You Sinners
Nettwerk Records
***

This ever-interesting American songstress takes the weight off her muse and settles down to a somewhat hit-and-miss collection of vintage standards by the likes of Cole Porter. McKeown's selection is fine, a measured revisiting of the known and the less known, while her arrangements are full of interest and enthusiasm without straying too far from the point. However, on such uptempo songs as Something's Gotta Give, the title track and I Was a Little Too Lonely . . . , her control is not all it could be even if there is a strong element of fun. On the credit side, McKeown's sensuous readings of Don't Worry 'Bout Me and They Say It's Spring ache beautifully, while the novelty numbers (including Fats Waller's If You a Viper) are camped up to the right degree. www.erinmckeown.com
