DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS
Brighter Than Creation's Dark New West ***

Hard to believe that Brighter Than Creation's Dark is the Truckers' seventh studio album - they're obviously here for the long haul. Shorn of young blood and all-round hotshot Jason Isbell, who left last year to follow a solo career, they were expected to struggle. But the new album is a thumping affirmation of their worth and commitment, albeit one carrying a little ballast to help them over the 19-track line. It is music of rugged and rasping country-rock (with the volume turned up on the latter), dripping with seasoned southern attitude and an ability to crank out climactic guitar solos seemingly at will. However, there are weak moments; a more judicious and disciplined hand would have helped this long album immeasurably by reducing it to 12 or 13 tracks. www.drivebytruckers.com
