TECHNO
Gesaffelstein
District 8, Dublin 11pm €8 soundcloud.com/Gesaffelstein
Last year's Aleph from French producer Mike "Gesaffelstein" Levy was an album of much wonder. The Lyon native, best known for providing production aid on Kanye West's Yeezus, showed off his knack for nagging, infectious melodies from sheets of cold, industrial, minimal, horrorcore techno. Support tonight from DeFekt, aka Dublin electro and techno producer Matthew Flanagan. JC
JAZZ
Hypnotic Brass Ensemble
The Sugar Club, Dublin 2-5pm €12/€9/€40 family soundcloud. com/hypnotic-brass-ensemble, thesugarclub.com
These eight brass-blowing brothers from Chicago (right) started out busking on the L. Now, with their Sun Ra meets Public Enemy sound, they’re conquering the world. Tickets are pretty thin on the ground for their night time shows (on Friday and Saturday). However, in a thoroughly enlightened move by hipster promoters Choice Cuts, HBE will also give special matinee performance with a Q&A aimed at families. CL
OPERA
La Traviata
Bord Gáis Energy Theatre
It has been 23 years since the last Irish visit of world-renowned opera company Glyndebourne. They now come to Bord Gáis Energy Theatre, Dublin's de facto opera house, with Verdi's tale of a beautiful courtesan whose past catches up with her. Verdi adapted his opera from a play, itself adapted from a novel, and La Traviata has been variously reinterpreted for film: it's the story of a fallen woman who keeps on falling. It's an old, punishing story, yet in Verdi passion runs high, the light burning brightest before it is extinguished. PC
