MIKA
We Are Golden
Casablanca ****
A children's choir, a gospel choir, some maniacal dance moves . . . all that's lacking in Mika's paean to listening to music in your bedroom as a teenager is a tennis racquet guitar. The lead single from his album of the same name, We Are Goldenis outrageously camp, heroically puerile and indecently good fun.
MUSE
Uprising
Warner **
With their legions of fans, millions of quid and shelf full of awards, will it trouble Matt Bellamy co that their latest new single sounds, to these ears, like a bad Radiohead tribute band doing the theme from Dr Who?No, I imagine it won't.
SLAYER
Hate Worldwide
American ***
The thrash metal veterans' most recent album, World Painted Blood, features an executive producing credit for Rick Rubin, who did so much to repackage Johnny Cash for younger audiences. There are no similar surprises here, however. This is Slayer. This is Hate Worldwide. It is exactly what it says on the tin.
BLACK EYED PEAS
I Gotta FeelingInterscope **
The sceptics wondered whether Black Eyed Peas could ever surpass the utter stupidity of their last hit, Boom Boom Pow. Well, the answer is that they can and they have. It's difficult to work out which is the most gratuitous here: the lingering shots of Fergie's breasts, Will.i.am's autotuned vocals or the transparently obvious product placements scattered throughout the video. Needless to say, it's already the hit of the summer.
KELLY CLARKSON
Already Gone
RCA***
Don't be surprised if Kelly's new single sounds familiar. The former American Idolwinner co-wrote Already Gonewith producer Ryan Tedder. The OneRepublic frontman apparently neglected to mention that he had already contributed a virtually identical backing track to Beyoncé's Halo, which hadn't then yet been released.
