EOIN BUTLER's guide to singles, downloads and free audiostreams
YEAH YEAH YEAHS
Heads Will Roll Interscope ****
"Off, off, off with your head," shrieks Karen O, on the second single from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs It's Blitz!album. "Dance till you're dead!" And in the grizzly accompanying video (a Thrillerhomage directed by The IT Crowd'sRichard Ayoade), that is exactly the fate which befalls the hipster trio: butchered, somewhat improbably, by a homicidal, disco dancing werewolf.
DIRTY EPICS
White Out ***
Written and recorded with producer Ken McHugh in Grouse Lodge Studios, Dirty Epics' White Liesis one of the more impressive efforts to come out of RTÉ's (widely derided) Raw Sessionscompetition. The Live Concert Finale takes place in the Button Factory in Dublin tonight. www.rawsessions.ie
BENNY ANDERSSON BAND
Story of a Heart Polydor **
On the first international single release by the Benny Andersson Band, former ABBA songwriters Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus are aiming for their first hit single in a quarter of a century (their last was Murray Head's One Night in Bangkokin 1984). Vocals here are by Helen Sjoholm.
FRANZ FERDINAND
Can't Stop Feeling Domino ***
“I can’t stop feeling,” moans an unrepentant Alex Kapranos.
“No, I won’t stop feeling!” Please Alex, just keep your hands to yourself, moans the rest of Franz Ferdinand.
GOSSIP
Heavy Cross Columbia ***
It has rightly been touted as the best thing on their Rick Rubin- produced Music for Menalbum. But there's no escaping the fact that Heavy Crossis little more than a shameless retread of the band's biggest hit to date Standing in the Way of Control.
VV BROWN
Shark in the Water Island ****
She's been tipped for stardom from a young age. But with significant radio support now, Shark in the Waterlooks set to be London singer VV Brown's (below) first chart hit. Her debut album Travelling Like the Lightis due next month.
