MICHAEL JACKSON
Morphine Epic ***
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the late King of Pop boasts eight of the top 10 songs selling on iTunes at the time of writing. This track, from Jackson’s Blood on the Dancefloor: HIStory in the Mix (1997), isn’t one of them. But lyrics like “Yesterday you had his trust, now he needs it twice as much . . . Oh my God he’s taking Demerol” seem eerily prescient in the light of recent tragic events.
THE CAMELEONZ
Should I Stay Jet **
“Should I stay?/Should I go?/ Should I risk it all for you?” Imagine what the Clash would have been like if their line-up consisted of former Home Away cast members. That’s roughly what this single sounds like.
GASLIGHT ANTHEM
The '59 Sound SideOneDummy Records ****
The '59 Soundis the latest single from New Jersey rockers Gaslight Anthem. That Bruce Springsteen, the band's hero (and most obvious influence), joined them onstage at Glastonbury to duet on this track won't do their chart prospects any harm at all.
CASCADA
Evacuate the Dancefloor Zooland Records **
“Evacuate the dancefloor/I’m infected by the sound/Stop, this beat is killing me.” Mindless pop pablum or a genuine appeal for help by the singer? Let’s hope it’s the former.
NINA SIMONE
Mr Bojangles Sony BMG ****
There are dozens of songs that might be considered appropriate to mark the passing of Michael Jackson. Somewhat perversely, I’ve found myself listening a lot to a song he didn’t write and never performed, but which I think sums up the position he found himself in later years. Like Mr Bojangles, Jackson’s failings were human failings. But his talent was divine. www.itunes.com
LADY GAGA
Paparazzi Interscope ***
The video for the third single from Lady Gaga's hit album, The Fame, consists of three minutes of heavy petting, followed by a song, followed by a revenge fantasy acted out in a bee costume. But hey, it'scatchy!
