Cheer up. Christmas is over. The nights are long. We're reduced to burning furniture for fuel. But in a few weeks, film fans will be plunged into the next Jameson Dublin International Film Festival (DIFF). Festival director Grainne Humphreys let slip a few choice details.
Hot films include Laurent Cantet's The Class, winner of the Cannes Palme d'Or; Everlasting Moments, the latest from veteran Swede Jan Troell; and the mainstream adaptation of John Grogan's bestselling cuddly-dog memoir Marley & Me.(Come on Jennifer Aniston. Do the right thing and turn up at the Savoy.) Other unmissable features include Let the Right One In, a contender for the decade's best horror film, and Three Monkeys, the most recent slow-burner from Turkish master Nuri Bilge Ceylan.
As ever, the festival will host retrospectives and satellite events. This year, Humphreys will dedicate a corner of DIFF to the great Belgian realist Chantal Akerman. And movie buffs who can remember the assassination of JFK will be pleased to hear that the festival will be hosting a grand quiz aimed at the over-55s. The event, which is organised in conjunction with Dublin City Public Libraries, asks individual libraries throughout the city to field teams of three people. The eventual clash of intellects will take place at Dublin City Library and Archive, Pearse Street.
The Jameson Dublin International Film Festival runs from February 12th to February 22nd. Details can be found at www.jdiff.com
