TOM TYKWER/JOHNNY KLIMEK/REINHOLD HEIL Perfume EMI ****
In 1998, German director Tom Tykwer invited techno producer Johnny Klimek and Reinhold Heil (best known for producing Nena's kraut pop anthem 99 Balloons) to form a band with him to write the score and songs for his arthouse hit Run Lola Run. Seven years and two films later (The Princess + The Warrior and True) they reunite again for Perfume, Tykwer's film version of the novel about an 18th-century serial killer. Performed by the Berlin Philharmonic (conducted by Sir Simon Rattle) and the State Choir Latvia, their beguiling score combines muscular orchestral passages and dynamic chorales with shimmering pulsing electronica. From the menacing The Method Works and the thrilling The Perfume to the brooding Grenouille's Childhood, Perfume is at once evocative (sly nods to Mozart), dramatic and surprisingly effective. www.emiclassics.com Jocelyn Clarke
