The prolific and eclectic Canadian composer Mychael Danna has created a subtly understated and masterful score for Breach, based on the true story of the Russian FBI mole Robert Hanssen, who was convicted of spying in 2001. Having defined his signature style of electronica with world music on the films of Atom Egoyan (Exotica, The Sweet Hereafter), Mira Nair (Karma Sutra, Monsoon Wedding) and Ang Lee (The Ice Storm, Ride with the Devil), Danna has recently begun to reinvent it. Combining elegiac strings with delicate piano, melancholic harp and forlorn woodwinds (and occasional jittery electronic pulses and abrupt percussion), along with long melodic lines and driving rhythms, Danna infuses his score with a dramatic urgency and emotional colour ­ a kind of brooding tension which is more threnodic than triumphant.
