SHOOTING of the Irish segment of Alan J. Pakula's thriller, The Devil's Own, finishes today, although some second unit work will be done here next week. The movie has been shooting in Inchicore and the Dublin mountains. Brad Pitt, who plays an IRA fugitive who flees to New York, completed his Irish scenes on Tuesday evening. Harrison Ford, who plays the New York detective who takes him in without being aware of his background, domes not feature in the movie's Irish scenes.
The film has gone over budget and over schedule, according to the US magazine, Entertainment Weekly (EW), which claims that the budget has risen from a reported $70 million to nearly $100 million, and that the shooting schedule is weeks past its June deadline. The film started shooting in New York in February. The production company would not comment to the Irish Times about these claims.
Furthermore, EW says, "the production has been haunted by reports of an ego clash between its stars," and the screenplay by Kevin Jarre has gone through various revisions - and script doctors, including Terry George, who scripted In the Name of the Father, and Man Pakula himself. "But," says EW, "as Ford's role got beefier, Pitt thought the delicate balance between their two characters had changed for the worse."
Ford's agent, Pat McQueeney, dismisses "all these ugly rumours" claiming there has been no battle for a dominant role. However, Margaret Colin, who plays Ford's wife in the film, says: "The feeling is we've got to deliver a hit, and we'll keep shooting until we have enough film to make it a hit. I'd like to finish up now. It's too long."
