Texan-born Jack Johnson became the first black boxer to win the world heavyweight title when he defeated reigning champion Tommy Burns over 14 rounds in Sydney, in December 1908. Johnson's arrogance and daring to have relationships with white women made him many enemies in the US. He held the title until 1915, when he was defeated by the new white hope, Jess Willard, with a knock-out in the 26th round.
