TOY STORY IN 3-D,Directed by John Lasseter. Voices of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Don Rickles, Jim Varney, Wallace Shawn, John Ratzenberger G cert, gen release, 81 min
If you were in a mind to get all righteously furious, you could equate Pixar's decision to release a digital 3-D version of Toy Storywith Ted Turner's notorious campaign to colourise classic films of the 1940s.
When, however, you sit down before the film, you are quickly reminded that Pixar favours a puritanically restrained approach to 3-D. The toys seem a little rounder and the perspective appears a bit smoother, but no hatchets are flung at the screen and no new vertiginous descents are inserted. In short, though the image is a little darker and you are forced to wear those darn spectacles, the 3-D does not significantly impair (or, indeed, alter) the viewing experience. Indeed, still desperately funny and morally impeccable, Toy Storyseems every bit as fresh as it did when it emerged 15 years ago.
If, by some supernatural circumstance, your children have not yet seen Pixar’s first feature then, the 3-D nuisance noted, you should get them to a multiplex at double quick time. The big screen is still the best place to see classics.
