Louise Holdenintroduces the winners of the younger age category of the 'Irish Times'SchoolMag competition, our search for some of the journalists of the future
An inquiring mind and an ability to weave a story out of everyday events are useful attributes for a journalist. Perhaps it's no surprise, then, that this year's junior SchoolMag winner is called the Nosey Parker. We chose Meánscoil na Toirbhirte's magazine because it tells the story of this Co Kerry school and the people in it with respect, humour and imagination.
Before making it onto the overall shortlist, this publication contributed both a creative and a writing winner to this year's roll of honour - the high standard of the work shone through in every category.
Teamwork was essential to the success of Meánscoil na Toirbhirte. Resourcefulness was also a quality of this magazine team, which drew on local resources for everything from interviews to photographic subjects.
To give you a favour of SchoolMag 2007, this week's Transition Times presents some of the best of the junior category. Expect to see some of these names cropping up in future SchoolMag competitions and beyond.
